Spicy Cajun Shrimp & Sausage Fettucine

In the past few months, we’ve become a no-pasta household. Between my wife’s recent celiac diagnosis and my focus on eating foods that will fuel training and recovery, pasta has pretty much gotten the boot. But when we want to indulge, we have pasta night.

Look, I don’t want to give carbs a bad rap. Lots of people will do that for me. But personally, loading up on pastas and breads makes me feel sluggish and achy in the morning. It has a definite effect on my training, so I choose to limit when I eat pasta. I also eat gluten-free pasta (out of necessity for my wife), which is either brown rice or quinoa pasta. If you want to cook with lo-carb pasta, whole wheat pasta, or any other substitute, or even regular white flour pasta, go for it. Track how your body responds to the carbs, and if necessary, decrease or increase what you consume.

With that out of the way, I’m free to talk about how absolutely delicious (and caloric!) this dish is. I lived with THE Donny Shankle for a few months, and learned to love cajun seasoning. This cream sauce is like an alfredo, but spiked with spicy cajun seasoning. We added lots of vegetables, shrimp and sausage to bulk this up, and seasoned all of it with even more spice. It is so damn good, you won’t regret the extra time spent at the stove.
