I’m pretty sure we all know, at this point, we should be getting “good fats” whatever-that-means, in our diets,  Avocado, near as I can figure it, fits the bill.  I put it in everything.  Salads (Cobb Salad, the manliest of salads), chicken sandwiches, sushi…man, it’s all good.  Below is a recipe for an avocado spread that makes adding avocado to “take it and go” type of meal, quick and easy.  It also keeps the avocado fresher, longer.

This smooth and creamy spread is great on sandwiches, as a dip, or on bagels. Avocado and garlic offer great fats and antioxidants while packing a tasty punch.

  • 1 Small avocado
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup onion (diced)
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice (Not lime juice. Don't argue with me.)
  • 1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce (or Crystal hot sauce or a chipotle pepper)
  • 2 teaspoons cilantro
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • pinch kosher salt
  • pinch freshly ground pepper (If you don't have it, fine, but DON'T replace it with pre-ground pepper. Please.)

Step 1
Peel avocado and throw it into the blender.
Step 2
Whip until completely smooth.
Step 3
Add cream cheese, lemon juice, and hot sauce and blend to mix.
Step 4
Pour the mixture into a mixing bowl.
Step 5
Stir in the onion, cilantro, garlic, salt and pepper.
Step 6
Garnish with diced tomato, onion, or spicy Mexican pickled carrots.
Step 7
Great on bagels with salmon, or with bagel chips, or in a wrap sandwich.

i’ve done something almost identical except i used plain greek yogurt instead of cream cheese. cut the fat content down a bit, made it every bit as creamy and tasted delicious. my buddies and i coined this as “meathead guacamole.”
